When should my child first see a dentist?

How often should my child come in for cleanings?

Most children benefit from a cleaning and exam every six months. Some — particularly those at higher risk for cavities — may benefit from more frequent visits. We’ll make a recommendation based on your child’s individual needs at each appointment.

What if my child is afraid of the dentist?

Dental anxiety is very common in children, and our team is experienced in helping nervous patients feel at ease. We take a gentle, patient approach and never rush a child. For children who need extra support, we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas), which is safe, mild, and wears off within minutes. Please let us know about any anxiety concerns when you schedule.

Does my child really need to have baby teeth filled?

Yes, in most cases. Baby teeth play an important role in chewing, speech, and holding space for the permanent teeth that follow. Untreated cavities can spread, cause pain, lead to infection, and cause early tooth loss that affects how permanent teeth come in. Treating a cavity early is easier and less costly than waiting.

Are dental X-rays safe for children?

Yes. The radiation in a modern dental X-ray is very small — far less than everyday environmental sources. We take X-rays only when clinically warranted and use digital technology that reduces exposure further. X-rays let us see cavities between teeth, monitor development, and catch concerns not visible to the eye.
